Franz Joseph Haydn

Franz Joseph Haydn was born in Austria in 1732. At the age of 29 he entered the service of the famous Hungarian noble family of Esterhazy. Under his direction, their orchestra became one of the finest private orchestras of the time. After the death of Prince Esterhazy in 1790, Haydn was dismissed from the Esterhazy estate and traveled to London. Some of his best works were composed during this period. In 1795 he returned to Austria and was honored throughout the country. Haydn's achievement in the instrumental music field earned him a place in music history. In fact, he has often been called the "Father of the Symphony" because his symphonic works so overshadowed the works of those who came before him.
