A biography of "HR"—as he was affectionately known to fans and colleagues—featuring personal insights from Pete Jolly, is included. Jolly, a renowned Los Angeles jazz and studio pianist, shares memories of his best friend, highlighting their long-standing friendship that began during their early days in Phoenix. An extensive section covers the history and development of the Epiphone© and Gibson© signature guitars that Howard created, along with the Benson© amp story, as told by Howard's original partner, Ron Benson, who established the first of the 'boutique' amplifier companies, so common today. Along the way, Howard's involvement with guitar education and publishing is described, culminating in the opening of the Guitar Institute of Technology (now the Musicians Institute) in 1977. Featuring a comprehensive discography, the book highlights Howard’s solo work alongside his contributions to major film soundtracks and hit records as a Los Angeles studio musician.
