This rousing collection of flatpicking guitar solos was drawn from traditional dance tunes and ballads of Ireland, Scotland and the border counties of Northumberland, Durham, and Cumbria. As these single-note melodic arrangements would normally be played at dances in unison with other seisiún musicians, the up-tempo tunes possess a compelling, foot-tapping energy.

The arrangements are in standard, drop-D and G tunings. As both notation and tab are present and many of the melodies lie on the upper three or four strings, these settings make excellent sight-reading material for all guitarists. If played as written—outside of first position and avoiding open strings—the guitar sounds more resonant with uniform tone quality between notes.

All in all, Bill Brennan presents a gratifying selection of tunes with much to learn, including access to his own online audio recordings.
