Irish. Mixolydian Mode. Roud 1418. Herbert Hughes was the first to publish this beautiful tune in Songs of Uladh (1904). Hughes traced it back to at least fifty years earlier to the middle of the nineteenth century. He did not include a key or time signature for the piece and the bar lines are irregular, so it doesn't fit easily into a regular timing. The lyrics concern a fairy-mistress (Leanan-Sidhe) who seduces mortal men before they become her slaves. In Gaelic folklore, the Leanan-Sidhe is a muse who gives inspiration to those she traps.
