Scottish. Ionian Mode. Roud V16946. The earliest published version of this tune appeared in James Johnson's The Scots Musical Museum, Vol.2 (1788). Robbie (Robert) Burns wrote the lyrics in 1791 with the daughter of a family friend in mind. The song describes the beauty of the plants and flowers in the early morning dew. The rosebud is a metaphor for the young girl - "So thou sweet Rosebud young and gay; Shalt beauteous blaze upon the day; And bless the Parent's evening ray; That watch'd thy early morning." It is a lovely gentle piece with a lilting and warm feel.
