A ballad from the 1700’s with lyrics by Glasgow poet, John Mayne. Some years later Robert Burns used the melody as a setting for his own poem.  The arrangement highlights the lilting minor key melody supported by stately chords in the left hand, along with some harmonic bass lines and variations. Both hands move up an octave on the first part of the last verse (optional). It’s usually played as a slow, expressive air but it can also be played with a more rhythmic, quicker  tempo with a simplified left hand.
