Jovan Jovicic

"Jovan Jovicic is one of my greatest students. A master, a great master of the guitar..."
André Segovia

With these words in October 1973, Maestro Andrés Segovia reaffirmed his esteem of Jovan Jovicic first voiced in 1961. At that time Jovicic had just completed his studies with Segovia at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy. His professor predicted an extraordinary success for Jovicic, both in his concert career and in his musical profession in general.

Jovan Jovicic was born in Vrdnik, a small town in Vojvodina (northern part of the Serbian republic) on July 5, 1926. His musical education began in his early childhood during his primary school. Like most of the children attending schools, Jovicic was at first focused on the violin, receiving private instructions for two years by a Russian professor who was teaching at that time in Ruma, the city where Jovicic attended school when he was eleven. But as soon as he was introduced to Ferdinando Carulli's method (an old publication brought to him by a friend) his interest diverted to the guitar.

After completing his formal education he became a prominent authority on acoustics and a professor of physics at the University of Belgrade. Holding a Ph.D. in Physics, he published many scientific works pertaining to the acoustic properties of the guitar.

In his earlier years, Jovicic was a self-taught musician and guitarist, having adopted the principles of Sor and Tarrega. Then in the late fifties and early sixties he studied with the great Andrés Segovia, who affected the "Renaissance" of the instrument at a newer more modern level. Jovicic also incorporated Segovia's concept of the improvement of playing technique of the guitar, and the presentation of works dedicated to it by contemporary composers. Jovicic adopted not only Segovia's high standards and principles of composing concert repertoire, but also his valuation of the guitar as a worthy, valuable, high-quality instrument which required thorough and systematic study.
