TODD MONTGOMERY
Todd began learning guitar chord changes at age 9 using a strip of wood shingle with frets and strings drawn on it. In the fifty years since then, he hasn't stopped exploring different stringed instruments. Most of that time was spent with the GDAE fingerboard, but he has also studied guitar, mandolin, Irish bouzouki, and sitar. He has played in bands in the genres of rock, folk, Irish dance music, classical Indian sitar and world music. He composed and produced original world, folk and rock music for 4 critically acclaimed albums (Fernwood: Almeria 2008, Sangita 2009, Arcadia 2015 with Gayle Ellett, and with the Kelp Dwellers, Surfacing 2020, he composed all tunes on the electric tenor guitar).
He had the good fortune to study classical Indian sitar with Harihar Rao, who was Ravi Shankar's oldest student and collaborator, and he learned how to play Irish tunes from Cait Reed in Los Angeles. He earned a master's degree in teaching and recently retired from 30 years as a high school special education teacher in public schools and is now focused primarily on teaching, composing and recording music. You can find him teaching lessons online at Tenor Guitar Time.
