            Sergei Slonimsky was born in Leningrad (now St Petersburg)  on the 12th of August 1932 into the family of the Russian  author Mikhail Slonimsky. The artistic environment of his  father and the rich cultural life of Leningrad made a lasting  effect on Sergei Slonimsky's development into an artist.   Starting very early on, Sergei Slonimsky took private lessons  in composition from V. Schebalin and Prof. B. Arapov. From  1950-1955, Slonimsky studied composition and piano at the  conservatory in his hometown and finally graduated in 1958  as a musicologist. Just one year later, Slonimsky was asked  to teach at his Alma Mater, where he has taught  composition until today. In 1976, he was appointed as a  professor. Slonimsky is also the author of over 200 works for  children and young people.  Some of the people who have  interpreted his music include the conductors: Jury  Temirkanov, Valeri Gergiew, Gennady Rozhdestvensky,  Arwid Jansons, Kirill Kondraschin, Vladimir Sinaisky, Mikhail  Jurowski, Jeffry Meyer, Jan Krein, and Vladimir Jurowski.   Slonimsky has been recognized for his work in music and  his commitment to education multiple times: he is a member  of the Russian Academy for Education, Russia's merited  artist (1987), prize winner of the Glinka award, and the  national award of the Russian Federation (2002), an  honored citizen of St Petersburg (1996) and winner of the  Commander's Cross Medal of Poland (2003).
