GUILLERMO DIEGO
Mexican composer/guitarist Guillermo Diego is considered a key figure in the world of contemporary Mexican concert guitar. He is a member of the National System of Art Creators. In 2015, he was nominated for his artistic contributions by the SACM (Society of Authors and Composers of Mexico) for the National Arts Award, the same institution that awarded him the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. In 2006, he was honored at the Chitarra Caroso Festival in Italy.
Diego's catalog is extensive and consists of pieces for solo guitar, as well as for guitar with chamber groups and orchestra. His works also include orchestral and opera music, among which Tresguerras-a work about Mexican Independence- stands out.
His music has been performed by such notable artists as Juan Carlos Laguna, Martin Madrigal, Roberto Limon, Gonzalo Salazar, Stefano Raponi, Victor Pellegrini, Rosa Matos, Jay Kacherski, Duo Aldebaran (Krista Jobson/ Hector Rodriquez), Antonio Laguna, Trio D'Argent de Paris, Ensemble Variances, Percussions Claviers de Lyon, Arequipa Symphony Orchestra, Peru, and the Fine Arts Chamber Orchestra of Mexico.
Guillermo Diego has been composer-in-residence at the Centrum Artist Residency program in Seattle, Washington, and at The Banff Center for the Arts in Alberta, Canada. He received scholarships from the National Arts Council of Mexico and the Rockefeller Foundation. He has recorded for Urtext Digital Records, Harmonia Mundi, and Quindecim Records. His collection of solo pieces, Album of Pieces for Solo Guitar, is published by Mel Bay Publications; with this same company, he has published Latin-American Folk Music for Classic Guitar, Latin American Dances for Classic Guitar, and Contemporary Guitar Composers of the Americas.
