RICARDO IZNAOLA
For more than five decades Ricardo Iznaola has distinguished himself as an international performing and recording artist, composer, teacher, and author. An American citizen, he was born in Havana, Cuba in 1949, and has resided since 1980 in the United States, after having lived in Venezuela and Spain, countries where he established deep roots and where he began and developed his international career as a concert artist, composer and pedagogue. After initial studies under Manuel E. Perez Diaz, in Caracas, where he also studied under the great Venezuelan virtuoso Alirio Diaz and established a strong relationship with the renowned composer Antonio Lauro, he worked under the mentorship of Regino Sainz de la Maza in Madrid, while pursuing studies in composition at the Madrid Royal Conservatory. Winner of nine international prizes as a performer and composer, including awards at the Tarrega, Munich, Caracas, Alirio Diaz, Granada, and Madrid Competitions, among others, he has performed, offered Masterclasses and judged international competitions on four continents and appeared in many international music festivals. His published works include didactic texts and musical scores distributed in Europe, the USA In 2004 he received the Distinguished University Professorship in Music, a life-long distinction that is the highest bestowed by the university on its faculty. In June 2016, the Guitar Foundation of America inducted Mr. Iznaola into its Hall of Fame, and awarded him the Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award, for "monumental contributions to the life and art of the guitar."
